Brit tourist, 61, missing after being swept away by wave off Barbados coast

A DESPERATE hunt is underway for a British tourist who was swept away by waves off the coast of Barbados.  Police said the 61-year-old, who has not been named, was last seen on a beach near Sunset Crest, St James on Monday.   The man, who was booked in to a guest house in Sunset Crest, had reportedly gone into the sea amid rough conditions.  Other people on the beach had repeatedly warned him not to enter the water.  After going in, he was reportedly hit by a large wave and did not resurface.  A spokesperson for the Holetown police station said a report had been received by a member of the public who had searched for the man after he disappeared.  A search both at sea and of the local area has been launched by Police Marine Unit, the Barbados Coast Guard, and other rescue personnel, but has so far failed to find the man.  A police source said: "The man was on the shore before he eventually went into the ocean.  "He was warned about the danger by the locals but it did not seem that he listened to their advice.  "The sea was very choppy and he was told that he should not go in the water.  "He ignored the warnings at his own risk and peril."
