Stampscapes Show-and-Tell: Claybord Art Tiles unboxing
About 20 years ago Ampersand Art got in touch with me about possibly forming a partnership with Stampscapes with the packaging of Stampscapes stamps with their art panels. I loved their products but stampers were primarily stamping on matte and glossy paper for their surfaces at the time and Stampscapes has always been a niche stamp line within the industry so I didn't think the time was right if it ever would be. A few years later people started stamping on unconventional surfaces like dominos so I thought the time could be right to introduce their products to the stamping world. My thought, at the time, was if people are going to enjoy stamping on objects like dominos (which require specialized inks, techniques, etc.), they might enjoy stamping on a three dimensional surface that's designed to accept a huge array of media, including all crafting supplies, is made for that, AND is museum/archival quality. When I first started taking it around and teaching classes with it, the Claybord name confused a lot of stampers. They assumed it was some kind of ceramics class even though they knew I was teaching it and I had a description of what we'd be doing on it. I think people just stopped at the name of the product and didn't read on. I talked with Ampersand about my dilemma and suggested they change the stamping sizes of their Claybord to "Stampbord" and that's what we went with. I used to teach classes around the country and we'd do make-and-takes with Stampbord for several years. Ampersand Art came out with several incarnations of the material and all of them were a lot of fun to use. Fast forward to today and Ampersand got in touch with me recently to let me know that they're going to kind of make a push with the product again but they'll name it Claybord Art Tiles. I told them that if they send me out some samples I'll start using it again but this time in my videos. I've always loved this surface and I wasn't exaggerating when I said that this is quite possibly the nicest stamping surface. I don't use anything that I don't really love and never will. There's not enough time for that. This is a surface that fine artists use for galleries and museums. All you need to do is look up Ampersand Art and you'll find them in every art supply retailer around the world. So, it's really incredible to have this material for our stamping/crafting world. I feel it's better than any paper and the surface can also be used like scratchboard so one can do reverse marks into the surface which is no small ability. That very aspect of the surface opens up the potential of the surface by leaps and bounds. Then, one can mount the materials on to cards or, because of the hardboard material, one can make the pieces into items like 3D embellishments, pins, magnets, coasters, and the list goes on. Okay, I'll stop here. I tend to write a lot when I'm passionate about something.
