Mario Kart DS Mission Mode - Level 1

Mario Kart DS Mission Mode - Level 1

Mario Kart DS, while much less of a radical departure from the standard Mario Kart formula established in MK64, still offers an interesting premise on level akin to Mario Kart: Double Dash. This is due to its inclusion of Retro Tracks, which while important will not be covered here for the foreseeable future, alongside Mission Mode. This mode attempts to offer a variety of skill based challenges, such as having to fight bosses or beat racers in duels. A mode such as this is unprecedented in the genre at large, with the only other game attempting such a concept (as far as I'm aware of) is Diddy Kong Racing by Rare. These two games attempt to offer an engaging single player experience through these modes (with Diddy Kong Racing's mode outright replacing a standard Grand Prix). As a result, this is an interesting concept that has been seldom explored. In execution, however, Mario Kart DS' mission mode falls short comparatively to Diddy Kong Racing's campaign. Much of the content of this mode falls short of expectations, with missions largely consists of driving through rings or collecting coins. While there are on occasion cool missions, such as the boss fights or racing duels, the others just aren't satisfying to play. Such an example is Mission 1-6, where you're expected to drive out of a Mansion backwards. I see the admiration and effort put into this level, but ultimately this isn't what someone would play Mario Kart for. There will be more examples in future videos, this is just an introduction (I'm nowhere near done).
