Pope Pius IX issued the Apostolic Constitution “Ineffabilis Deus” on December 8th, 1854, the day of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, declaring the Immaculate Conception a dogma. This begs the question: why did it take nearly 19 centuries to declare dogmatically such a bold statement of Truth? The Immaculate Conception is a belief with deep roots in Catholic Tradition and a rich history that spans nearly two millennia to reach this dogmatic decree, and that’s what we will be exploring today: where did the Immaculate Conception come from, and how did the doctrine develop into the understanding of the dogma we have today.
