The game was formally announced by SEGA at Gamescom in August 2019 and is considered Amplitude's "masterpiece." Comparable to Sid Meier's Civilization series, Humankind lets players lead their civilization through six great eras of human civilization, starting with the Nomadic Age, and define how to expand its borders, develop cities, research new technologies, control its army and various civilian units, and interact with other civilizations on a virtual planet randomly generated at the start of each new game. A unique feature of the game is that, with each new era reached, the player can select one of ten civilization types based on historical social systems, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Since the player can select different civilizations as time passes, there are potentially a million different civilization patterns that can ultimately be developed. Civilization building follows the model of Endless Legend, another Amplitude game. Each continent has several territories, each of which can contain a single city. Over time, the city can expand to contain farms and other resources, as well as new urban areas near the city center, allowing for the creation of large metropolises in each territory. Furthermore, if a player faces a hostile army, the game uses a tactical role-playing game-style format for detailed battle resolution, giving the player the opportunity to exploit the terrain and special abilities of their units to their advantage. Such battles last only three combat turns before the game reverts to its standard global perspective, so wars can even last years at this scale. Similarly to Endless Legend, the player can obtain resources such as food, industry, gold, science, and influence, which can be spent to accelerate production or advance technology, or used as trade goods with other cultures. The game also adds an element called Fame, which is earned when a civilization is discovered first or builds a World Wonder; Fame remains a persistent measure of its relative successes and can significantly impact in-game decisions. Furthermore, while Civilization has multiple victory conditions, in Humankind, victory is based solely on Fame after a certain number of turns, allowing for greater flexibility in one's victory strategy. The game also includes certain characters and events based on historical records with which the player can interact. (from Wikipedia)
