Bulava missiles: Russia's Submarine Aces Nuclear Missile Test
Russia's new strategic nuclear submarine has conducted a successful test of a Bulava intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads. The missile is designed to carry up to six nuclear warheads and was launched from an underwater position in the White Sea off Russia's northern coast. The test resulted in the missile hitting a target thousands of kilometers away on the Kamchatka peninsula in the Russian Far East. The Russian defense ministry stated that the ballistic missile test is the final phase of state tests before deciding to accept the submarine into the Navy. The exact date of the test launch was not immediately clear from the statement. Submarine Imperator Alexander III is a modernized Borei-A variant in the Russian Project 955 class. In Nato, they are known as the Dolgoruky class of submarines, named after the first boat, Yuri Dolgoruky. The Borei class submarine is equipped with 16 Bulava missiles, with each missile having a range of approximately 8,000 kilometers. President Vladimir Putin has increased military spending and worked to rebuild Russia's nuclear and conventional forces following the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991.
