At the FIA hearing at the end of the 1997 Formula 1 season, Michael Schumacher finally admitted that the collision with Jacques Villeneuve was a mistake and he took full responsibility. Schumacher originally accused Villeneuve of using him as a brake to get round the corner. Max Mosley delivered the FIA verdict. Schumacher lost his second place ranking in the drivers' championship that year for Ferrari.
