Although numbered among the "Sturm und Drang" symphonies, this piece was actually composed several years before them. Its main source of delight lies in the delicious finale, a fugue which emerges effortlessly out of the preceding three movements and provides a magnificent culmination--one prepared with Haydn's usual skill and good humor.
