Russia Ukraine war: Mass graves in Izium may be ‘worse’ than those found in Bucha
Facing adversities since the military invasion by Russia, Ukrainian authorities recaptured towns in the northeast region in September 2022. Witnesses and victims in Izyum reported of torture, killings and forced disappearances carried out by the Russian forces that previously captured the region Taking back control, Ukrainian officials began to look for evidence of potential war crimes. Investigators discovered that a forest area located on the outskirts of Izyum was being used as a makeshift burial site More than 400 bodies were discovered from these mass graves. A large grave was marked informing that it contained bodies of 17 Ukrainian soldiers. Identities of the deceased remained unknown, as the faces were not recognizable Ukrainian officials claimed that there had been evidence of torture on some corpses. One of them even had a rope around his neck. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, “Bucha, Mariupol, now, unfortunately, Izyum, Russia leaves death everywhere.” Around 100 investigators were searching for any possible clue of their names.
