Coastal Vietnamese cities began experiencing rain on Thursday as they braced for Typhoon Kalmaegi. According to Associated Press Kalmaegi was moving towards the country after leaving a trail of destruction in the Philippines. The typhoon left at least 114 people dead and more than 100 missing in central provinces of the Philippines, in the deadliest natural disaster to hit the country this year. Vietnam’s aviation authority Thursday issued a storm alert, with several airlines canceling or rescheduling flights to and from central and highland cities as the typhoon moved closer to landfall. Authorities in the country's central and highland provinces evacuated residents and raised disaster alerts earlier this week. Coastal areas from Hue to Dak Lak were warned of flooding and erosion as waves and rising sea levels threatened to inundate low-lying areas. Officials also cautioned that strong winds and heavy rain could trigger flash floods, landslides and possible tornadoes. Vietnam has been pummeled by a relentless series of storms this year, leaving little time to recover between disasters. Typhoon Ragasa dumped torrential rain in late September, then Typhoon Bualoi slammed the central coast and Typhoon Matmo resulted in flooding in the north. Together, the three storms left more than 85 people dead or missing in two weeks, and caused an estimated $1.36 billion in damage. Vietnam is among the world’s most flood-prone countries, with nearly half its population living in high-risk areas.
