Ashoka Professor Arrested: Nationalism, Free Speech, and the Price of Dissent | India Today Global

Ali Khan Mahmudabad — a renowned professor of political science, historian, and head of the department at Ashoka University — was arrested on Sunday morning by Haryana Police. His alleged crime? A social media post questioning the selective celebration of inclusion in the Indian armed forces. Mahmudabad highlighted the irony of Hindutva supporters praising minority and female officers while remaining silent on widespread hate and violence against those same communities. What followed was swift retaliation — a BJP youth leader, Yogesh Jatheri, filed a complaint accusing the professor of inciting communal disharmony and promoting rebellion. Soon after, a second FIR was lodged by Haryana State Women’s Commission chairperson Renu Bhatia, claiming Mahmudabad’s remarks were misogynistic and unpatriotic. Arrested under serious charges including public mischief and threatening national unity, Mahmudabad is now in custody. Ashoka University has said it is cooperating with authorities, but students and faculty have condemned the move, staging protests and calling it “calculated harassment.” Mahmudabad, a Cambridge PhD and respected academic, denies all allegations, stating his comments were about protecting both civilians and soldiers.
