He’s played a key role in launching or guiding the careers of major artists including Danny Elfman, The Bangles, Rod Stewart, Rush, BTO, The Police, and Supertramp. Mike also managed Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, Gary Myrick, Angelique Kidjo, and Lisa Langlois, and helped Broadway star Paige O’Hara—the voice of Belle in Beauty and the Beast. As Director of Publicity at Mercury Records, Gormley spearheaded campaigns for Thin Lizzy, The Runaways, The Ohio Players, and Kraftwerk, and played a key role in signing The New York Dolls. He later became VP of Publicity at A&M Records, working closely with The Police, Supertramp, Herb Alpert, and Squeeze. Mike co-founded the management company LAPD with Miles Copeland, guiding Oingo Boingo frontman Danny Elfman to score Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, launching Elfman’s acclaimed film scoring career. He co-founded Wildcat Records, distributed by Universal, with chart success from Michael Damian and The Boomers, and discovered comedian Craig Shoemaker. He has consulted for Groovaloo, Rhino Records, Nickelodeon, and Funzalo Records, and now advises Dallas psych rockers Moon Waves. At 18, Mike was already writing for the Ottawa Journal, and later for the Detroit Free Press, Playboy, Creem, Billboard, and others. He also wrote speeches for Canadian PM Pierre Trudeau. Mike taught “The Insider’s Guide to Music Management” at UCLA Extension, and has served on numerous boards, including Folk Alliance International, AFTRA, Women In Music, and the nonprofit Armory of Harmony, which turns gun metal into musical instruments.
