(29 Jan 2014) Delegations representing the Syrian government and opposition groups arrived at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva on Wednesday for further peace talks. Damascus was angered on Tuesday by a US decision to resume aid to the opposition - prompting UN mediator Lakhdar Brahimi to cut short the session. Brahimi said he decided to cut short the talks "without any request or pressure from anyone". Tuesday saw the fifth day of negotiations focusing on opposition calls for the formation of a transition government and help for the besieged city of Homs. But there has been little progress towards resolving a key issue of whether President Bashar Assad should step aside and transfer power to a transitional government.
