Expect a thrilling ascent through rugged alpine terrain, glacier lakes, and steep gravel switchbacks. 🛣️ A road built for summer skiing This extreme mountain road wasn’t built for military use, but rather for tourism and sport: in the early 1960s, it was developed to serve the Sommeiller Glacier, then home to one of Italy’s first summer ski resorts. The initiative was led by Edoardo Allemand, in partnership with the VA.RO. company. Their goal was to attract skiers and international athletes in the summer season, competing with French and Swiss glacier resorts. From 1963 until the early 1980s, the glacier hosted skiers and national ski teams. As the glacier gradually retreated due to climate change, the resort became unusable and was eventually abandoned. In 2022, a commemorative bivouac shelter was installed at the summit to honor the site’s unique alpine and sporting history. 🧭 A European altitude record: 3,009 m The Sommeiller Pass remains the highest road in Europe open to private vehicles, though only 4x4 or adventure motorcycles are recommended past the paved section.
