It was released on December 10, 2020, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, GeForce Now, Google Stadia, and Microsoft Windows. It was released on February 15, 2022, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Based on the pen-and-paper role-playing game Cyberpunk 2020, it takes place 57 years later in the fictional city of Night City, California, an open world with six different regions where humans are now cyborgs. The game is played from a first-person perspective, and the player takes on the role of the mercenary V, who possesses hacking and machine-operating skills, commands an arsenal of firearms, and has a wide range of melee combat abilities. Cyberpunk 2077 was developed using CD Projekt Red's in-house REDengine 4. 530 employees of CD Projekt Red were primarily responsible for the development of Cyberpunk 2077, exceeding the number of people involved in the development of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015), the studio's most recent game. To support production, CD Projekt established a new division in Wrocław, Poland, and collaborated with DigitalScapes, Nvidia, and QLOC. Mike Pondsmith, game writer and creator of the Cyberpunk universe, served as a consultant on the development. Actor Keanu Reeves plays one of the main roles. The soundtrack features music by Marcin Przybyłowicz and several licensed artists. Several adaptations have been and continue to be produced, including the web anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, a comic book series, and a card game. In total, over 5,200 people were directly or indirectly involved in the development of Cyberpunk 2077. While the PC version received very positive reviews, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions were criticized for serious technical issues. Sony even removed the game from the PlayStation Store on December 17, 2020, due to these shortcomings. The game returned on June 21, 2021, but with a warning that performance problems could occur on the PS4 and that a PS4 Pro or PS5 was recommended for playing.
