The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is a service of Scripture and song that dates back to the late 19th century. In it, nine Scripture lessons are included that recount the Fall, the promise of a Messiah, the Incarnation, and the Great Commission to preach the Good News. Each is then followed by a carol that reflects on the lesson's message. Each service begins with “Once in Royal David’s City” and concludes with “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing!” The first Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was written for Christmas Eve at Truro Cathedral in England in 1878. In 1918 and every year since, the service is held at King’s College, Cambridge on Christmas Eve. Many worshipping communities in England and the United States celebrate this festival during the Christmas season.
