Vertical Engagements_15_2015 - 'From Green Urbanism to Low Carbon Cities' - Steffen Lehmann "Steffen will speak about his interdisciplinary research in transforming cities and focus on recent research projects and principles in architectural/urban design, stimulated and informed by his architectural design process and practice. One of the main questions for practitioners, researchers and educators today is how to best engage in effective research that is relevant, has an impact in society and supports decision-making towards more sustainable architecture and urban development, to improve the lives of people in cities. Steffen will explore the holistic notion of 'green urbanism', which extends the concept of the sustainable city to include optimising all urban material flows, systems and green spaces. The ultimate aim is urban precincts run by 100 per cent renewable energy, full resource recovery and re-use of existing buildings. To achieve this, cities need to be re-engineered with well-being and all flows in mind (flow of materials, energy, water, transport, supply chain data, space and creativity) to become more sustainable and resilient." About Steffen Lehmann: "Steffen Lehmann, Dr (TU Berlin), AA Dipl (London) is a German-Australian urbanist, educator and since 1993 registered as a chartered architect and urban designer in Berlin. Since 2014 he has served as Head of School and Professor of Architecture, School of Built Environment, Curtin University. Steffen is a thought leader in the field of sustainable urban and architectural design principles, exploring our complex relationships with nature and place. With his own practice, Steffen was actively involved in the architectural creation of 'New Berlin'. His most recent book is: 'Low Carbon Cities.
