Chem 10 - Chapter 3 Properties of Matter

Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. We can classify matter into pure substances (elements and compounds) and mixtures (homogeneous and heterogeneous). The three states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas. Physical changes occur when matter undergoes a physical change of state, but its composition remains constant. Chemical changes take place when the original substance is converted to a new substance with different physical and chemical properties. Characteristics of a chemical change can indicate when a reaction is taking place. Physical and chemical properties are characteristic of a given substance.
