This week, join us in Karakol, the beating heart of adventure in Kyrgyzstan and the perfect launchpad for hikes, boat trips, and cultural experiences. Having only managed a day trip on our last visit, we set out to truly uncover what makes Karakol such a unique destination, highlighting everything you can do both in town and in the beautiful surroundings. 🏙️ City Walking Tour: Dungan Mosque & Russian Orthodox Church We started our Karakol adventure with a city walking tour, covering the main attractions on foot. First stop: the Dungan Mosque, a structure that visually blends Buddhist temple architecture with Islamic tradition, a testament to the Chinese Dungan community’s presence here. Then it was on to the striking Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church. 🛍️ Quirky Shopping & Soviet Nostalgia Next, we found ourselves at the Antique Shop of Aleksandr Korablev, a hidden gem packed with relics from the Soviet era—cameras, Olympic pins, porcelain dolls, postcards, and even a border control hat from the USSR, each color denoting different agencies like police or navy. 🏛️ Museums & Free Walking Tours We also squeezed in a stop at Karakol’s History Museum, complete with a fascinating taxidermy collection. Pro tip: the tourist office runs free, tip-based walking tours three times a week with local guides, perfect for getting insider stories and historical context. ☕ Café Culture & Social Good at Fat Cat Karakol Needing a break from exploring, we headed to Fat Cat Karakol, a coffee shop recommended by fellow travelers. 🌧️ Bazaar Adventures & Rainy Day Realities We paid a visit to the Karakol bazaar, an essential local experience. Just keep in mind: many stalls close early on Saturday afternoons, and as luck would have it, we got caught in a classic mountain downpour. 🍲 Traditional Dungan Family Dinner & Cooking Classes Our evening brought us to a Dungan family’s home to prepare and enjoy Ashlyanfu, a spicy cold noodle starch soup, with a spread of at least eight different dishes, as tradition dictates. The hospitality was unforgettable! Later, we took a Uyghur cooking class to master laghman noodles. 🚤 Issyk-Kul Lake Boat Cruise & Scenic Day Trips No visit to Karakol is complete without time on Issyk-Kul Lake. We hopped aboard a large boat for a relaxing cruise on Przhevalsky Bay, surrounded by mountain vistas and blue water. Nearby, a must-see is Jeti-Ögüz, known for its dramatic “Seven Bulls” red rock formations. There are yurt camps in the area for those wishing to linger, and a quick trip further takes you to Barskoon Gorge, famed for its waterfalls and the bust of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who vacationed here after his historic space flight. 🥾 Hiking, Horse Treks & Forest Adventures As the adventure capital of Kyrgyzstan, Karakol is the gateway to some of the best hiking and horse trekking in Central Asia. Though we were recovering from a 3-day horse trek, we opted for a scenic half-day hike, rewarded with panoramic views of Karakol, lush valleys, and cool, shaded forests.
