The game's strongest aspect is its fast, brutal combat, arming Kratos with chained blades that tear through enemy hordes with visceral satisfaction. At the same time, magic abilities and a temporary rage mode add welcome variety to the carnage. Level design mixes intense combat arenas with clever environmental puzzles, and the platforming sections, though occasionally imprecise, rarely overstay their welcome. The story unfolds as a proper Greek tragedy, revealing a man consumed by guilt and rage whose actions are impossible to condone yet strangely compelling to witness, and is supported by excellent voice acting and a sweeping orchestral score. However, the fixed camera can sometimes hide threats, certain quick-time events demand very fast reflexes, and a few difficulty spikes may frustrate players seeking a smoother experience. Despite its age and rough edges, God of War delivers a bloody, brutal, and beautifully paced action experience that introduced one of gaming's most iconic antiheroes...
