Tell me how to fix hard drive not detected errors. I’m assuming the hard drive is actually there. It would be rather hard to miss. Now, is it connected to what it needs to be? It would be rather hard to get the error message if it wasn’t. You can get the error for an external drive, too. If you were working with an external hard drive where you backed up your files or a USB flash drive, make sure it is actually connected. Let’s assume it is. If you’re working with a Windows machine, see if it is visible in the Disk Management tool by hitting Windows and R or entering diskmgmet.msc in the run dialog box. What if I see it, and more importantly, what if I don’t? If the PC does not recognize it and cannot even see it in disk management, on that PC or any other, it’s dead. Let’s suppose you can see it in disk management. Unplug the USB and move it to another port, in case the problem is the port and not the disk drive. If it is connected to a USB hub, connect it directly to the computer instead to see if that works. That only works if the problem is the USB port it was connected to. Sometimes the USB hub does not give the external drive enough power to be recognized by the PC, generating the error. This is driving me nuts. If the computer cannot see the hard drive, the problem could be a device driver. You can check that using Device Manager. I could run all the device driver updates in the queue and see if that fixes it. Look at the device manager and see if there is a yellow exclamation mark by the device – if so, you know the driver is the problem. But I might not get advice on what to do. It might tell you an update is needed or it failed after an update, at which point you should roll back the driver. Or it may have a different error. All else fails, Google it. You could try creating a new partition on the device to allow Windows to access it. Pick the object on Windows Disk Management, right click on the space and select New Volume. That’s not too different from the process of creating a new folder. After you add the partition, make sure it has a drive letter assigned so the PC can see it. This is a USB drive, not a PC. I do not think it has that much space to need a new partition. So reinstall the USB controllers. Your computer may give fix hard drive not detected errors because the USB controller software is corrupted or unstable. Unstable? It has an existential crisis!
