i don't know - original song

here is my final assignment for my Seminar in Teaching 2 class where I had to write a song with a beat created in my preferred DAW. Assignment: Compose, produce, and perform a song with guitar and backing drum track. For this one, you can use any chords/progression that you want. Please also create a 'beat' in your preferred DAW. (Optional, you can flesh out an entire rhythm section if you choose.) Submit your performance; the lead sheet for your song; and a short written reflection that details what inspired your song and then how/where this could fit into a secondary general music curriculum. "i dont know" by juja chords: Esus2, A6sus2, Bsus, G#m7(b13), F#7sus, C#m11, Bsus tuning: DADEAD Capo on 2nd fret lyrics: Rabbit caught in headlights when you ask Seeing futures is one trait that I don’t have Wish that I could tell you - dont know how to find The answer to your question when you ask me I dont know But what I know is I dont know how to be without you You’re always there when all falls through you build me up when I can’t see All the things I can do that you see in me When I’m just sitting here… Peter Pan don’t take my hand - I’m trying On my best behavior cuz I’m next in line Rushing to get ready - don’t know how to find The answer to your question when you ask me I dont know But what I know is I dont know how to be without you You’re always there when all falls through you build me up when I can’t see All the things I can do that you see in me When I’m just sitting here… and I’m just sitting here Ooo Ooo I dont know how to be on my own I dont know what it means to be all alone Tell me what you, what you see What is it you can see that makes you believe I dont know how to be without you You’re always there when all falls through you build me up when I can’t see All the things I can do that you see in me When I’m just sitting here… I’m just sitting here Rabbit caught in headlights when you ask Seeing futures is one trait that I don’t have _____________ Reflection For this song, I wasn’t sure what to write about at first. Being that this would be my third time writing lyrics, I didn’t want it to be an easy love song or something generic that I couldn’t relate to. So eventually I decided I really wanted it to be about the fear of growing up and the confusion one gets when figuring out who they are and what they want to do in life. Originally, the chord progression I had was more somber and sad, but I changed it to what it is now because not only did I want it to emulate a longing for answers, but I also wanted it to be hopeful and comforting that it is okay to not have everything figured out. Essentially, the song is about not knowing what’s next but having hope for the future because other people believe in you even when sometimes you don’t. For the beat, I created a drummer track on GarageBand. I wanted a serene, “coffee shop” feel so I made the beat simple with a woodblock, shaker, shekere, cajon, and foot stomps. At first I was wary and unsure of how it would sound with the song, but once I sang to it, I loved how it blended together. Regarding secondary general music curriculum, I imagine that I would assign this same activity as a final project and performance to a class of high school seniors. Because they would be graduating soon, I would sing this song, not only as an example for the project, but also as a “parting gift” for the students moving forward in college.
