She started playing the cello at the age of 4 and went on to study at the London Cello School at the Guildhall School of Music, where he studied with William Preece. In 1960 she received the Queen Elizabeth Special Award for her school. She made her debut in London at the age of 16. In 1965, she performed Elgar's Cello Concerto on a tour of the United States with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, earning rave reviews that she was "a match for Casals". At the end of 1966, she married pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim at the age of 21, while interacting with young musicians of the time.
