Dispersed Camping in Colorado? With this video, the Two Tired Teachers are hoping to start a discussion about dispersed camping in Colorado. While we had thought we would have no problem finding dispersed places to camp, that was not our experience. Our first attempt at finding dispersed camping was at the Great Sand Dunes National Monument. We had done our research, but when we got to the dispersed place, there were three signs telling us that the road was closed. We are rule followers; if the road is closed, we aren't going down it. Besides the signs telling us the road was closed, we could easily see for a mile or so, that there was nowhere to turn around. We were towing, and we're not going to get ourselves in a really difficult situation. That night we spent the night in a Bass Pro Shop parking lot in Colorado Springs. Again, we had some research that told of wonderful dispersed places around Colorado Springs. We were still towing when we went to find these places. We were on great gravel roads, and we followed the directions from the GPS. We went many miles, and came to a place telling us we were entering a private road. We went far enough to turn around before we drove back the way we had come. We tried a couple of other places without any luck. When we have to drive down a dirt or gravel road for miles without knowing that we can turn around, we aren't comfortable. We ended up spending another night at Bass Pro Shop in Colorado Springs. It wasn't what we had planned, but we were tired of striking out. Our next stop was Longmont. We knew we had the mission trip there, and we knew we wanted to stay at the Boulder County Fairgrounds. We spent two nights there. It finally gave us a chance to unhitch the trailer and look for dispersed camping somewhere not far from the Denver/Longmont area. The point of the video is that we went to three different areas and spent a day at each one looking for dispersed camping. We never found any that we were comfortable trying to drive the trailer to. If you have experience with dispersed camping in Colorado, we would love to hear from you. Please, leave us comments.
