Informal comments to the media by Mr. Amb. Majid Takht Ravanchi, Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations, on the situation in Iran. United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo today (20 Aug) notified the United Nations that the US will reinstate sanctions on Iran, previously lifted under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), known as the Iran nuclear deal. Speaking to the press after presenting a letter to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and to the President of the Security Council, Pompeo said, “the one-sided, foolish nuclear deal didn’t bring security for America. It didn’t bring stability to the Middle East, nor did it moderate the regime’s behaviour. And it never can. It never will. Today’s actions puts additional pressure on Iran to behave like a normal country and to come back to the bargaining table. We call on the international community to join us in crafting a stronger deal that addresses the full range of Iran’s behaviour and protects people of all nations that simply want to live free from Iranian predation.” The Secretary of State said, “no country but the United States has had the courage and conviction to put forward a solution.” Other countries, he said, “chose to side with the ayatollahs. Their actions endanger the people of Iraq, of Yemen, of Lebanon, of Syria, and indeed their own citizens as well.” Pompeo said, “we think this is really straight forward, we think this is very simple. These UN Security Council resolutions will come back into place 31 days from now, and the United States will vigorously enforce them.” Also speaking to reporters, Iran’s Ambassador Majid Takht-Ravanchi said, the US “attempted to mislead the international community by resorting to lies and fabrications supposedly initiate a mechanism under resolution 2231. Takht-Ravanchi said, “this is nothing but legal and political bullying. Through political manoeuvring, media campaign, and creating legal confusion, The US wants to create a self-arrogated right which does not exist. The US has not such right because it has officially ceased, as President Trump said, its participation in the JCPOA, and in practice, since May 8th, 2018, it has not participated in any JCPOA related meetings, events and activities.” The Ambassador said, “the US has no legal argument watshover to present itself as a participant of the JPOA. The US has no legal, no political support within the Security Council and we are definitely confident that the Security Council will reject the latest US move.” The JCPOA agreement, reached by Iran and the P5+1 (China France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) was endorsed by UN Security Council Resolution 2231, adopted on July 20, 2015.
