Argentina can be divided into four topographic areas - the northeastern plains, the steppe region or "Pampa", the upland plateau of Patagonia, and the Andean mountainous region. The northeast of the country is occupied by the vast Laplata lowlands, consisting of the Gran Chaco plains, the northern Pampa regions, and the extensive lowland plains between the Paraná and Uruguay rivers. The northern part of the district is a highly eroded lava plateau cut by numerous rivers, in the center lies a flat marshy lowland, and in the south a hilly plain crossed by sandstone ridges "cuchillas". The area has a humid subtropical climate and is covered with wet and dry evergreen forests, grasses and marsh vegetation (rapidly disappearing under the pressure of irrigation activities). The area is often referred to as "Argentina's Mesopotamia". Most of the country's cereal crops are grown here. The vast Pampa Plain, which rises gradually from the Atlantic coast to the foothills of the Andes, occupies 25% of the country's territory. The Pampa is divided into the northeastern Low (Wet) Pampa with elevations of 25-200 m above sea level and the southwestern High (Dry, 300-600 m) Pampa. The Pampa is bounded on the south by the low hills of Tandil and De La Ventana, and on the west by the hills and foothills of Córdoba and the foothills of the Procoldiriera and Pampa Sierra. Almost all of Pampa is occupied by South American steppe ("pampas"), for which it is named. It is the main cattle-breeding area of the country.
