REASONS BEHIND THE SOVIET INVASION & DEFEAT IN AFGHANISTAN

The Soviet Union invaded neighboring Afghanistan; in December 1979 in the pretext of stabilizing the country from insurgency and protect its communist regime. During the preparation for occupation, the Soviets Communist party leaders assumed that the Soviet army would take a few weeks or months to accomplish the whole objective. But the Soviet invasion triggered one of the most successful insurgencies in the history of modern times that we know as the Mujahideen. In 1989, due to Mujahideen's resistance, the Soviet Union was forced to leave Afghanistan. But this 10-year long war devastated the whole country. The Afghan-Soviet war caused more than one million Afghans' lives. Millions of Afghans fled to neighboring countries as a refuge; many became internally displaced (IDP). Fearful of future Soviet military aggression, Pakistan and its ally, the United States, Saudi Arabia, and China supported Afghan Mujahideen by providing financial aid and arms. In this video, I have described the reasons behind the Soviet's aggression of Afghanistan; and its consequences. Here, I have also explained the role of the United States and Pakistan in ensuring the defeat of the Soviet Union in this ten years of war.
