Osmosis in Potato Cups | Osmosis Class 9 | Biology Experiment Hello Friends In this video I have shown you the process of Osmosis in Potato Cups. This is a simple experiment which everyone could perform at their home to understand the process of osmosis easily. Osmosis is the movement of water molecules through a selectively permeable membrane. It is the passage of water from a region of higher concentration through a semi-permeable membrane to a region of low water concentration. Procedure of this experiment : 1.) Firstly take four potatoes and some sugar and salt kept in a small plate. 2.) Now, Cut one potato and scoos it out to get a potato cup. 3.) Now Repeat this process with the remaining potatoes. 4.) Keep cutting until four potato cups are obtained. 5.) Now Put a of teaspoon sugar in one potato cup and put a teaspoon of salt in another potato cup 6.) Now boil one potato cup in fry pan. 7.) Wait 2-3 minutes for it to get boiled. 8.) Now, keep one potato cup empty. 9.) Keep these for around 2-3 hours. 10.)Now try to observe them Observations : We will see that water will gather up in the hollowed portion of the potato cups in which sugar and salt were present. The reason for this observation is that the inner surrounding of potato cups became hypertonic solution as sugar and salt were present in it. Therefore the cells of the potato cups released water which was gathered in the hollow portion of the cups. Whereas water does not gathers up in the hollowed portion of the cup that was left empty as it was empty so the process of osmosis did not take place and in the case of the cup that was boiled, water did not gather up in its hollowed portion because after boiling the potato the cells were dead and dead cells do not perform the process of osmosis.
