The Sinking of the Titanic

The Sinking of the Titanic

On April 10, 1912, the Titanic departed from Southampton, England on it's maiden voyage to New York, USA. The ship made a quick stop at Cherbourg, France and Queenstown (now Cork), Ireland before sailing to New York with 2,208 people on board. At 11:40 PM on April 14, 1912, the Titanic struck an iceberg on the starboard (right) bow (front) and began to sink. When Captain Smith was informed that the Titanic would sink, he immediately ordered passengers to board the lifeboats. Unfortunately, the Titanic only had 20 lifeboats, which could only carry a total of 1,178 people, which would leave 1,030 people to their demise. The first lifeboat to leave was launched an hour after the collision, and the last lifeboat left at 2:05 AM. At 2:18 AM, the Titanic broke between the 3rd and 4th funnels. The bow section sank immediately, while the stern (back) rose up into the air, and then went under at 2:20 AM, 2 hours and 40 minutes after the collision. 1,502 people died in the sinking, mainly due to hypothermia. Only 706 people survived, and were picked up by the Carpathia to New York.
