Features Chan’s family in a breakfast scene, true to Biggers’ novels, a rarity in the series. The title comes from Chan’s proverb: “Death is a black camel that kneels unbidden at every gate.” Robert Young’s film debut, playing a minor romantic role at age 24. ======================================================= The Shanghai Cobra Trivia: Directed by Phil Karlson, this was his first Charlie Chan film, noted for its noirish atmosphere, unusual for the series. The film’s jukebox, which triggers a venomous needle via the coin return, was a fictional invention but inspired by real 1940s remote-operator jukeboxes. Actual footage of the 1937 Japanese bombing of Shanghai is used in a flashback sequence
