Mouth Breathing and its harm to our health were highlighted in a recent book by James Nestor called Breath—a magnificent book that shares the author's own experience of moving to nasal breathing and working to change his mouth-breathing habit. Mouth breathing can be harmful—especially when it becomes a chronic habit—because it disrupts the body’s natural breathing mechanics and affects multiple systems. Here’s a breakdown of why mouth breathing is bad: ________________________________________ 🫁 1. It bypasses the nose’s natural filtration system • The nose filters dust, allergens, and microbes before air reaches your lungs. • Mouth breathing lets unfiltered air (and irritants) enter the airways, increasing the risk of respiratory infections, allergies, and asthma. ________________________________________ 💨 2. It reduces oxygen efficiency • Nasal breathing produces nitric oxide, a gas that helps widen blood vessels and improve oxygen delivery to tissues. • Mouth breathing reduces nitric oxide levels, leading to lower oxygen absorption and potential fatigue or brain fog. ________________________________________ 💤 3. It disrupts sleep quality • Chronic mouth breathing often leads to snoring or sleep apnea, which fragments sleep and prevents deep rest. • Poor sleep affects mood, concentration, hormone balance, and metabolism. ________________________________________ 😬 4.
