New Developments In Police Chief Allegations

The scandal involving Asheville's Police chief continues to grow. This morning, an officer went public alleging Chief William Anderson attempted to cover up an accident involving his son. City officials say an internal investigation has been launched. The city manager has requested two senior staff members to investigate the issue. Lt. William Wilke was the scene commander for the March 9th accident involving Chad Anderson, son of Police Chief William Anderson. Lt. Wilke says on March 13th, he went to the city manager to express his concerns over what he knew to be false and misleading information given by Chief Anderson to the newspaper, and was told to wait until the SBI investigation was complete. The next day, Lt. Wilke claims he met with Chief Anderson and Capt. Stony Gonce and was coerced and expected to submit to a set of facts and circumstances regarding the accident involving his son that were clearly false and misleading. Mayor Terry Bellamy says she and city officials are taking these accusations very seriously. Hours after making his statement, Lt. Wilke was with his lawyer at Asheville's City Council meeting. He nor did any other officers present address the council. We believe it's important our employees feel safe and that their jobs are protected and we're just making sure that everything is done above board and so the staff has responded appropriately, said Bellamy. District Attorney Ron Moore tells News 13's Megan Schiering that the investigation into these accusations is over. At the request of his office, the SBI and FBI interviewed Lt. Wilke again. When asked if he had any new information to add to his original statements, Wilke responded no. Therefore Moore says there is no further investigation. At this point, the district attorney's office is only moving forward with Chad Anderson's case. Moore also says he does not condone the actions of Chief William Anderson in regards to pulling Wilke out of an SBI interrogation back in March.
