Diabetic Ulcers

Diabetic Ulcers

At our Center for Wound Healing, we see countless numbers of diabetic patients with foot ulcerations. These foot wounds, are typically caused by a lack of normal sensation, known as diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The high levels of blood sugar as accelerated this condition causing degeneration of the nerves. Pressure or friction over a bony prominence on your foot has caused a blister or callus to form which then progresses to an open wound or ulcer. Ulcers are so serious because they can, many times, end in amputation of the leg and, unfortunately, death upon amputation of the second limb. These ulcers are more deadly than prostate cancer or breast cancer. Treatment involves good blood glucose control with the aid of the family doctor, good nutrition to support healing and appropriate off-loading to take pressure off the wound. We, here at Gaston Foot & Ankle Associates, use a team approach working with the family doctor, when necessary, a vascular surgeon, as well as nutritionists, physical therapists and others to be sure all of the patient's needs are addressed. A variety of wound treatments to include debridement, specialized wound dressings, reconstructive surgery and diabetic shoes are all utilized to get the patient's wound to heal as rapidly as possible.
