Growing up I always pictured hell as a fiery pit somewhere in the bowels of the earth that was home to satan and his demons. I thought that anyone who wasn’t saved went there immediately after death and burned in the fire. Whether they burned up and were gone, or burned for eternity, wasn’t something that I thought much about. I just knew that there was fire, and I didn’t want to go there. Then at some point I was introduced to the idea that hell is simply the state of being separated from God for eternity. You either just cease to exist, or you’re just outside of the kingdom. You’re not burning in a fiery pit somewhere. Over the years I have waffled between different points of view about hell without much conviction and without much study of my own about the subject. But I thought that it was time for that to change. So here is what I’ve found the Bible actually says about hell.
