The developers managed to infuse that old-school spirit of party-based exploration, stakes involving fate and sacrifice, and emotional character arcs while wrapping it in a fresh, modern coat of paint. Combat in Clair Obscur is where that blend really shines. On one hand, the structure is pure classic JRPG: you control a party, pick youar actions, manage skills and resources, and strategise. On the other, there are real-time elements - dodging, parrying, timed counters, free-aim ranged attacks - that make battles feel alive. It avoids the staleness that sometimes comes with traditional turn-based fights. As someone who grew up loving the tactical rhythms of turn-based games, this hybrid system instantly clicked for me. Beyond just gameplay, the story and atmosphere in Expedition 33 have that grand, emotional sweep that brings back memories of classic RPG storytelling - parties bonded by tragedy, haunted pasts, and desperate quests against fate. At the same time, themes here of loss, hope, artistic symbolism, and moral ambiguity feel more mature and nuanced than many older titles. The world design, the haunting elegance of its art, the layering of light and shadow (both literally and metaphorically) create a haunting beauty that lingers long after you put down the controller. For me, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33a is exactly what the phrase “modern classic” should mean. It honours the past - the high-stakes journeys, the emotional beats, the camaraderie of a well-balanced party - while daring to evolve, to refine, to surprise. Playing it feels like rediscovering what once drew me to RPGs, and realizing there’s still so much untapped potential.
