Scintillating Sound of the Week Ep. 3: Dundun and Djembe drums

West African drumming. Good medicine, amazing fun, and pure magic. Headphones ON to get the bass sounds and balance that dang bell 😜💫 I know I should cut down on the length of this video (cuz algorithm) but I can't make myself do it. I love it all, especially the second half of this clip.❤️‍🔥 My good friend and collaborator, Matt (who is also an amazing teacher) taught me four new-to-me rhythms on the #dundun in an hour. Can you hear em'? 🙌 I made the #djembe that he's playing on. Her name is Abeni. She was the first instrument I learned how to play in a therapeutic context and got me through my divorce 13 years ago. ❤️‍🩹 Playing again is like coming home, and few things are more magical for me than the moment when a group drops into the rhythm and really locks it in.🔥 Each #rhythm is distinct and has its own purpose, meaning, and significance in the cultural context...healing, celebration, mourning, warning, peace, worship, gratitude, harvest, communication, rites of passage, etc. 🪘 When playing, we're connected to others across time and space who have played those same rhythms for centuries --- it's a living language and history in its own right. 💫
