Mental Health Awareness in the Classroom

Mental Health Awareness in the Classroom

Today, I’m going to cover three ways you can teach your students about mental and emotional health. First, talk about it. Just like we talk about physical health, talk about mental health in your classroom. The best thing we can do for young people is destigmatize mental health issues so they aren’t afraid to seek help when they need it. Awareness is SO important. Don’t be afraid to share your journey with your mental health with your students. Vulnerability and authenticity go along ways with kids. Second, make it normal to talk about feelings and emotions. Include reflection and journaling time into class assignments. Make sure your students know who they can talk to if they’re struggling. And third, look for programs or curriculums that are specifically geared for teaching about mental and emotional health. I’ve created a program called “The Power of PATH: Building Resilience for Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Curriculum.” I’ll include a link in the description of this video, so you can check it out. Remember, the best teacher is a good role model, so be sure that you are taking care of your own mental and emotional health today as well!
