Monocot Seed – Description (Example: Maize grain) A monocot seed is single cotyledon bearing and usually endospermic (food-storing tissue present). In monocots like maize, the seed and fruit are fused together because the seed coat and fruit wall (pericarp) are inseparable. 🔹 Structure of a Monocot Seed: Seed Coat & Pericarp: Thin and fused together. Protects the seed from mechanical injury and desiccation. Endosperm: Large and occupies most of the seed. Rich in starch, acts as a food reserve for the embryo. Separated from the embryo by a protein-rich layer called the Aleurone layer. Embryo: Lies on one side of the endosperm and consists of: Scutellum: Single, shield-shaped cotyledon. Helps in absorption of food from endosperm during germination. Embryonal axis: Has two parts: Plumule: Future shoot, protected by a sheath called Coleoptile.
