In this video I walk from Najaf to Karbala for Arbaeen, the largest annual pilgrimage in the world where over 25 million people gather to honor Imam Hussain. This is a five-day journey on foot and I document every part of it, from my arrival in Najaf to the powerful moment of reaching the shrine of Imam Hussain on the Day of Arbaeen. My journey begins in Najaf, where I explore the city and visit the holy shrine of Imam Ali, one of the most important places in Islam. I walk through the Najaf bazaar, meet locals, and feel the powerful build-up to the pilgrimage. The streets are full of energy as the walk to Karbala begins. Over the next five days, I walk more than 80 kilometers with people from around the world. I show you exactly what this journey is like — where people sleep, what they eat, and how they’re treated along the way. Food is offered freely at mawkib every few meters, from rice and bread to kebabs, desserts, tea, and fruit. Pilgrims sleep on sidewalks, in tents, mosques, and public rest areas set up by generous volunteers. I meet people walking from Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, India, Lebanon, Nigeria, and beyond. Everyone is united in their love for Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad who stood against oppression and was martyred in Karbala. When I reach Karbala, I visit the shrine of Imam Hussain and take in the emotional scenes on the Day of Arbaeen. The air is full of prayer, reflection, and love. If you have ever wondered what Arbaeen is like, what it feels like to walk for days with millions of people, or why Iraq hosts the largest peaceful gathering in the world, this video will show you everything.
