Known as a « Keystone Species » because their ordinary daily activities provide an extraordinary and essential balance to their environment and to those who share their natural community, Gopher tortoises are ‘Burrowing Architects‘, digging extensive burrows that can be up to 40 feet long and 10 feet deep! These burrows provide shelter and refuge not only for the tortoises themselves but also for over 350 other species, including mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. Now that’s SUPER!!! #GopherTortoises are also ‘Habitat Engineers’. They alter the landscape when creating their burrows, which helps maintain the structure and health of their ecosystem. Their burrows offer protection for many species during extreme weather conditions, such as fires and hurricanes. Gopher Tortoises are experts at commensalism. Commensalism is a type of relationship between two living things where one benefits, and the other is not affected at all. It’s like having a friend who likes to give you presents, but you don't have to give them anything back. Super Cinnamon and his Gopher Tortoise friends are all super amazing like that, they can give without expectations or needing anything in return. Super cool!
