Original Intents: The Meaning of the U.S. Constitution

Andrew Shankman, professor of history, discusses the cooperation and conflict among Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and Thomas Jefferson, three writers of the U.S. Constitution. He examines their disagreement about the meaning of this governing document, and the relevance of their concerns in modern America. Shankman is the author of "Original Intents: Hamilton, Jefferson, Madison, and the American Founding" (Oxford, 2017) and "Crucible of American Democracy: The Struggle to Fuse Egalitarianism and Capitalism in Jeffersonian Pennsylvania" (Kansas, 2004), and he assisted in the creation of "Hamilton," an exhibit at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.
