Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost – August 13, 2023

Pastor Todd preaching from Psalm 105: 1-6, 16-22, 45b Music by John Kendall Bailey Have you ever had one of those weeks? (Or maybe you’re having one of those months—or even years.) Well, then this week’s Psalm is for you. Psalm 105 is a spiritual pep-talk of sorts from the mighty King David (whom you might remember was called “a man after God’s own heart”). Yet as I read it, I wonder if the king might be having one of “those weeks” himself. As if to shore up his spirits, he takes stock of the times God showed up for God’s people: times that were dire, bleak, even hopeless; David reminds himself (and anyone listening) that God had kept—and would continue to keep—their covenant with God’s people forever. Remember this, he urges. For us, like David, it can feel like there’s quite a gap between our experience of past or present struggles and the relief of God’s goodness and faithfulness. But for the king, the key to bridging that gap is uttered in verse 4. Because there—between struggle and deliverance—well, that’s the space God is waiting to meet us. Praise the Lord, indeed!
