These are legitimate hidden gems where you can still show up without tripping over other foreigners, where the locals haven't built their entire economy around expat services, and where you might actually be one of the first people from your country to call it home. We're talking about five amazing hidden gems to live or retire abroad that you've never heard of, places with no expat communities to speak of. Our first hidden gem sits in northern Albania, right where the country meets Montenegro, and I can almost guarantee this place has never crossed your radar. This is Shkodër, and once you understand what's actually here, you'll be shocked it's not already flooded with expats. Kutaisi is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. We're talking over 3,000 years of history. It was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Colchis, the same place from Greek mythology where Jason and the Argonauts went searching for the Golden Fleece. So yeah, this place has serious historical weight behind it. Veliko Tarnovo is built on and around three hills that overlook the Yantra River, which winds through the valley in a series of tight loops. The effect is stunning. Houses cling to the hillsides, stacked one on top of the other, with red tile roofs, narrow streets, and medieval fortifications rising from the cliffs. At the top of one of the hills sits Tsarevets Fortress, a massive stone stronghold that was once the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire back in the 12th to 14th centuries. Walking through Tsarevets, you get a real sense of scale. The fortress covers the entire hilltop, with thick stone walls, towers, a restored palace, and a church at the summit. At night, they do a sound and light show that projects images and music onto the fortress walls, telling the story of Bulgaria's medieval history. It's dramatic and genuinely moving, even if you're not a history buff.
