Star Wars Battlefront is a 2015 action shooter video game developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts. Based on the Star Wars franchise, it is the third main installment of the Star Wars: Battlefront series and is considered a reboot rather than a sequel to the previous Pandemic Studios games, reflecting the new Star Wars canon established by Lucasfilm after being acquired by Disney. The game was released on November 17, 2015, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. Played from both first-person and third-person perspectives, the game focuses entirely on multiplayer combat across iconic planets from the original trilogy including Hoth, Tatooine, Endor, Sullust, and later Jakku, with players fighting as either the Rebellion or the Galactic Empire in various game modes such as Walker Assault, Supremacy, Fighter Squadron, and Heroes vs Villains, alongside playable iconic heroes and villains like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, and the Emperor. Unlike previous Battlefront entries, the game does not feature a traditional single-player campaign, instead offering Missions and Skirmish offline modes against AI. Built using DICE's Frostbite 3 engine and developed using photogrammetry techniques to capture authentic Star Wars visuals, the game also received assistance from Criterion Games on speeder bikes. The first DLC, Battle of Jakku, was released for free on December 8, 2015, followed by four paid expansion packs covering Outer Rim, Bespin, Death Star, and Rogue One: Scarif. Star Wars Battlefront received mixed to positive reviews from critics, who praised its visuals, music, and high production values but criticized its lack of content at launch and use of a season pass model, while still selling over 14 million copies worldwide.
