How Goans were baptised.. The Dark Side of ‘Saint’ Francis Xavier

📜They called him a saint… but history tells another story. In 1542, Francis Xavier arrived in Goa as a Jesuit missionary and co-founder of the Society of Jesus. Within just a few years, he urged the Portuguese king to establish the Goa Inquisition — one of the darkest chapters in India’s colonial history. Temples were destroyed, sacred books burned, and thousands of locals dragged to dungeons. Torture became a weapon of faith: Strappado — victims suspended by arms tied behind their backs until shoulders tore. Racks — limbs stretched until joints dislocated. Thumbscrews & whips — relentless pain until conversions were forced. Breast Rippers — unspeakable punishments inflicted on women who refused baptism. Yet today, Francis Xavier is celebrated as a saint… while the countless unnamed victims remain forgotten. This is their story. This is the truth they never taught us.
