A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justices Sanjay Kumar and KV Viswanathan is now hearing a clutch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. In his submission, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the petitioners, said, “Let me broadly address what the challenge is about. Through parliamentary legislation what is sought to be done is to intervene in an essential and integral part of a faith. I refer to Article 26 and many provisions of the Act violate Article 26." The West Bengal Police have arrested two men in connection with the murders of Hargobindo Das, 72, and his son Chandan Das, 40, in Dhulian, even as 40 first information reports (FIR) have been filed, as part of a crackdown following the recent violence in Murshidabad’s Jangipur and Shamshergunj areas. Miscreants allegedly hacked the father-son duo to death in Samserganj block of Murshidabad district.
