This was the toughest ride of my entire journey across Africa. After leaving Cabinda, the Angolan enclave on Africa’s west coast, I crossed into the Democratic Republic of the Congo and began riding towards the border town of Matadi. What followed became one of the most physically and mentally exhausting days I have ever experienced on a motorcycle. The road through the DRC countryside quickly deteriorated into deep sand, rough tracks and relentless heat approaching 40°C. Riding a heavily loaded adventure motorcycle through these conditions demanded everything I had — strength, concentration and endurance. But the final 10 kilometres changed everything. The road became progressively worse, the heat was taking its toll and I was completely exhausted. Every metre became a fight to keep the motorcycle moving and upright. Eventually I reached the point where I knew I had almost nothing left. Another kilometre under those conditions and I genuinely don't know if I would have made it. This wasn't about chasing danger or trying to create drama for a camera. It was simply one of those situations where a series of decisions, difficult terrain, extreme heat and physical exhaustion pushed me much closer to my limit than I had expected. Somewhere ahead was Matadi, and the only option was to keep moving. This is the story of my ride from Cabinda to Matadi through the Democratic Republic of the Congo — and the hardest 10 kilometres of my journey across Africa. Welcome to the DRC. 🏍️ THE JOURNEY: I’m riding solo across Africa, documenting the road, the people, the landscapes and everything that happens along the way — without a support crew and without staged adventures. This journey has taken me from Morocco through West and Central Africa, across the Congo and Angola, and eventually towards southern Africa and Cape Town. 🌍 ROUTE IN THIS EPISODE: Cabinda, Angola → Democratic Republic of the Congo → Matadi, DRC 🏍️ MOTORCYCLE: Honda Africa Twin DCT Every journey, encounter and challenge shown in this series comes from my actual ride across Africa.
