For we saw his star in the East and have come to worship him." When King Herod heard this, he was alarmed, and all Jerusalem with him. He summoned all the chief priests and scribes of the people, and learned from them the place where the Christ was to be born. They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written through the prophet: ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the clans of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel. ’” Then Herod called the wise men aside and learned from them the exact time the star would appear. Then he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. When you have found him, bring him back to me, that I too may come and worship him.” When they had heard the king, they set out. And behold, the star they had seen in the East went before them until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. They entered the house and saw the child with Mary his mother. They fell down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And, having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they withdrew to their own country by another route.
