(28 Oct 1996) T/I: 11:25:08 Qazi Hussain Ahmed, the chief of Pakistan's fundamentalist Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) party, was released late on Monday (28/10) after his arrest earlier during a day of widespread protests. Ahmed was arrested during clashes between police and his supporters trying to march to the national parliament. The clashes with police were the second series in two days in an escalating campaign by the JI aimed at ousting the government of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, which stands accused of corruption. Police used teargas to repel groups of the activists in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
