Inspired by material composed by the group while performing around Europe, it was recorded after numerous sessions at Abbey Road Studios in London. The album explores themes such as absence, the music industry and the mental deterioration of Syd Barrett, one of the group's founders. The first sessions were a difficult and arduous process, starting with Waters' idea of dividing the album's centerpiece, "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", into two parts, uniting them with new compositions. "Shine On" is a tribute to Barrett, who, coincidentally, paid a visit to the studio while it was being recorded. The band were unable to recognize him immediately, as he had gained weight and undergone changes in his appearance.... Wish You Were Here reached number one on the Billboard charts, selling more than six million copies in the United States alone, where it was awarded a gold record on September 17, 1975 and sixty-fold platinum on May 16, 1997, by Recording Industry Association of America. Worldwide, the album sold more than 13 million copies....
